How Chords Work on Piano - Live Stream Recording

This is a recording of a class we held talking about how chords work on the piano.  A triad has three notes and every triad has three notes; a root, a third, and a fifth.  Seventh chords have four notes; a root, a third, a fifth, and a seventh.  In this lesson, we talked about the following chords.

1. Major Chords - These chords sound bright and happy.  You can make a major chord on any note by playing the starting note, then counting up 4 half steps, and then three from there.

2. Minor Chords - These chords a darker and sad in sound.  To play any minor chord, play the starting note, then count up three half steps and then four from there.

3.  Diminished Chords - A very tense and dramatic sounding chord.  These chords are made up of a starting note, the third is three half steps above that and the fifth is another 3 half steps.

4.  Augmented Chords - Another tense sounding chord, but a little brighter and more spread out compared to the diminished chords.  The formula for this chord is four half steps and four half steps.

5. Major 7th Chords -  Sound dreamy and are made up of a major triad plus a major 7th (half step away from the octave)

6.  Minor 7th Chords -  Sound a little jazzy and are comprised of a minor triad plus a minor 7th (whole step away from the octave).

7.  Dominant 7th Chords - Sound bluesy and are comprised of a major triad plus a minor 7th (whole step away from the octave).
