Rhythm refers to a pattern of notes over a period of time.  Before you can understand rhythm, you will need to learn about note durations.  Note durations as the name suggests is how long you will hold a note for.  A quarter note gets one beat, a half note gets two beats, a dotted half gets three beats, and a whole note gets four beats.  A time signature is a number over another number.  You will say the top number first, then the bottom number.  So the time signature 3/4 is said "three four".  The top number tells you how many beats are in each measure.  A measure is the distance between each vertical line within the staff.  The bottom number signifies which note gets one beat.  So if the bottom is a four, then the quarter note gets one beat, the half note gets two beats, and the whole note gets four beats.
