Tips on how you can find a great piano teacher.

It’s an exciting time when you’ve decided to take piano lessons!  A good teacher is what you need to get you started on your musical journey and playing some fun music for your friends and family in no time at all.   

There are several important things to consider when you’re looking for a teacher that will be a great fit for you and help you grow in your musical knowledge and experience.  Fortunately today we have the option of taking lessons online as well as in person, which can be really beneficial for anyone that works a lot, is homebound, or simply prefers learning in the privacy of their own home.

Finances

First, take a look at your finances and determine how much you can spend on lessons. Most teachers offer 30, 45, and 60 minute lessons at a specific rate for each time segment, and fees can range anywhere from $30.00 - $100.00 per lesson.  Make sure you ask any teacher that you’re thinking about studying with what their rates are and what payment policies they have in place. Also, ask if they accepts online payments, as this can save time for everyone and is quite convenient to use. If you’re considering doing online lessons, ask what types of packages the teacher may offer and do they provide live lessons or video courses.

Location & Online Lessons

Second, consider the location of the teacher in relation to where you live and make sure you’ll have adequate time to reach your lesson on time each week. Some teachers offer lesson times that are outside of normal work hours to accommodate any special scheduling needs.

For those that plan on studying online, location will not matter, which is one of the great benefits of online lessons.  You’ll just want to make sure you and your teacher can schedule a convenient time for both of you to meet online if you’re going to schedule live lessons, or, if you’re teacher offers a set of lesson videos that you can study independently, this could be the perfect fit for those who want to study and practice at their own pace.

What do the lessons include?

Third, ask if they also offer music theory, performance opportunities, and any type of group lessons in addition to your regular lessons. Online piano teachers often provide specialized videos on music theory, rhythm, ear training, and many other topics relative to piano playing that are important.  Ask if they can introduce you to current online programs, such as Soundslice, that provide interactive sessions for the student to practice a certain technique or help with note reading. Fourth and finally, you want to utilize as many resources as possible to find a great teacher. Talk with friends and family to see if they know of anyone they could recommend and use social media to ask for references. Conduct your own search for online piano teachers and include sites such as YouTube, Udemy, to find a number of online videos and piano teachers.
