What we focus on is important and can affect how fast we reach our goal of playing the piano well. There are a lot of things that are happening in our piano playing that we might not even notice because our focus is directed towards something else. Too many times, our attention is on the “whole picture”…meaning we don’t feel that we’ve accomplished anything because we still can’t play the whole piece or the whole exercise. After all, that is our goal and it’s important that we stay focused on that goal. But when we only stay focused on the big picture only, we miss all of the subtle smaller accomplishments that we’re achieving along the way!
You see – it’s what we focus on that determines our outlook on our playing and progress. This is true in life as well. We can always look at what we still need to learn and accomplish and if we look at only that, we will just end up being discouraged all of the time! When we take a minute to breathe and look at what we have accomplished and how we did that, it helps us to stay positive and energized to get through each new difficult challenge that we face in our piano playing. Stay focused on what you have accomplished while you stay connected to the bigger picture; it will really help you accomplish more in each day.
