Looking for More Connection to Your Piano Playing?

The majority of us that start learning the piano do it by learning how to read music, count different rhythms and play from music. 

This is considered a more traditional type of education and it involves learning mostly classical music and playing traditional piano pieces in that genre.

Many of us stay in this genre all during our piano playing. Sometimes, when we stay in a certain mode of anything in life, including our music, we stagnate, or we don't have the same passion we once did. 

Sometimes this can be alleviated by learning new pieces and changing our practice routine a bit. 

Other times, it can be that we need to reach out and start experimenting with other types of genres to play from!

Just because you started out playing classical, it doesn't mean you have to stay there. Why not try something completely new?

There are several different types of music that pianists and other musicians can play besides Classical music. 

• Jazz
• Blues
• Rock n Roll
• Funk
• Gospel/Religious
• Pop

That's quite a variety of different types of music to choose from! A lot of this music is in written form and can be played from sheet music. Other types have no written sheet music and it is simply improvised during performance and/or rehearsal. 

But how do you know which one you would connect with the most in your piano playing? 

Think about what type of music you like to listen to the most.

Do you love to listen to Eric Clapton? Then try playing some Rock n Roll. Are you active in your religious community and worship center? You might love playing some gospel or music that you use at church. If you are more of a Jazz buff, then listen to some of your favorite jazz artists and try to imitate what you are hearing on your piano. You can do this with any type of music.

It comes down to following what you already love...what gets your toes tapping and your heart happy. 

You don't have to stop playing classical music to start playing a new style either. Learning the language of music like we do when learning to play the piano traditionally only enables us to broaden our reach and play other types of music. Classical training lays a very good and solid foundation so we then can branch out and apply those techniques to all kinds of new musical styles. 

So if you're feeling a bit stuck or unengaged in your piano playing right now, try playing a completely different style of music than you are used to. Chances are your level of enjoyment and fun will greatly increase and you'll even find that you're playing your classical music with more appreciation and technically better than before!

Remember, learning the piano is an individual journey. We all may start out on a common path but along the way we will see many different other paths that we should explore to bring even more fulfillment into our lives and music.
