How many times have you heard a song on the radio, or in a concert, or even when you were out to dinner...and you couldn't wait to get home to try and figure it out on your piano? It's one of the best things about learning to play the piano...when we can put everything together that we've learned and then sit down and just start making our own music. Playing by ear isn't the way we're usually taught in the beginning. Some musicians actually never even learn to read music...they play everything by ear! It's an interesting phenomenon..."note readers" usually stay note readers, and "play be ear" folks usually stay that way too. Maybe it's because we tend to stick with what we're comfortable with. But you're not going to be satisfied with staying just in your comfort zone, are you? Of course not! You probably wouldn't have started learning to play the piano if you weren't interested in growing and learning something new. So whether you're a committed "note reader" or already on your way to learning how to play by ear, you'll be able to apply these tips to help you get more comfortable with playing by ear, learn what to listen for first in a song so you'll have a good starting place, and be able to play the entire song much faster!
One more thing that you can and should do is learn Dictation. This is where you hear a song and then write it down on manuscript paper without any help from your keyboard. This is pretty far into music theory but is actually standard material for anyone pursuing a music degree in college. Take some time to learn about dictation and experiment with it yourself. It's challenging but you will learn so much from doing this. Start with a song that you already know...it is really much easier to figure out on the piano and it will give you a positive experience to start with. Hopefully that will encourage you to try even more! Stay Tuned to PianoLessonsOnTheWeb.com to learn much more and achieve your dream of playing the piano! Leave a Reply. |
